Arts Company Celebrates Success
Christine Hall and Wenda Bradley, the directors of the successful local arts company, Artemis Arts are marking the fifth anniversary of the organisation by holding an exhibition of work by a young artist who took part in the 2006 Dialectic exhibition, in the Foundry Gallery, North Street, Lewes. Antony Hall was a student then and exhibited with other young artists in
‘ The Young Persons Art Market’.
Antony Hall is now returning to the venue for his first one-man show. “His work is already attracting interest from galleries and private buyers and it’s exciting to have the opportunity to show his work again”, said Wenda Bradley.
“We first saw the interior of what was then the Market Lane Garage in February 2006 when plans for the proposed development were being exhibited. We were given permission to clean up the space and the courtyard to have one exhibition. It was then expected that the building would be demolished to make way for the new development,” said Christine Hall.” Five years on we are still here”.
Over 16,000 people have attended exhibitions and events at the venue, which was once part of the Phoenix Ironworks. A successful Lottery funded project traced the history of the ironworks and a piece of new music, ‘The Phoenix Cantata’ created by composer Helen Glavin is being developed based on the oral histories of the workers.
The large industrial building has become an important platform for local artists and musicians and has been visited by hundreds of local school children and students. Artemis Arts is a charitable trust and relies on donations and grants to maintain the building and to run events. “The future is uncertain but we will continue to run the space as long as we are able,” said Christine Hall.
